Esteban will take you to two of the most beautiful countries in Asia: India and Nepal. In this workshop, you will take the best pictures of the best locations at the best moment. You will always be accompanied and guided by the best experts to make this workshop an unforgettable experience.

Travelling to India is the dream of many travel photographers. Walking through the streets, with your camera on your hands, is one of the biggest challenges you can put yourself in. India is chaos, color, moments, landscapes, portraits; it is to see human being in its most genuine way to be.

You will fall in love with Nepal. Photography lovers will be enchanted by the beauty of the mountains, the colors of the rice terraces and the local faces. Tireless travelers will enjoy watching the Himalayas and the Mt. Everest, as they will also enjoy contacting local Tibetans living in Nepal.

Our group in India will have a maximum of 10 people, so you can have a personalized experience where you’ll be guided to each one of the locations we will visit.

Travelling to India on your own is not an easy task. We have already found all the people and locations for our workshop. When travelling with us, all you have to worry is framing; we take care of the rest.

Our group in Nepal will have a maximum of 4 people, so you can have a personalized experience where you’ll be guided to each one of the locations we will visit. Our group will be smaller in Nepal because we will have an exclusive flight over the Mt. Everest at sunrise, in which only 5 people are allowed.

During our trip you will have exclusive experiences that if you’d travel by your own, you’d hardly find the opportunities you’ll have with us. All the chosen locations, villages and people we will meet have been thought exclusively for photographers.

ITINERARY:

15 days from March 15th in New Delhi to March 29th in New Delhi (hotel included until March 29th noon).

6 days Nepal extension*, from March 29th in New Delhi to April 3rd in Kathmandu (hotel included until April 3rd until noon).

In our expedition we will have private car that will take us to all the locations in the different regions of India and Nepal. During all our trip we will have bottles of water and snacks available at the car.

*This extension in Nepal is only available for 4 people. It means that if you’re interested in living this wonderful experience visiting and photographing The Himalayas and Mt. Everest, you’ll need to book your place right away!

Day 1: March 15th

Our meeting will be on March 15th at night in Delhi. We all must have arrived this day at Delhi. It is really important to consider the time difference (GMT +5:30), because it can cause confusion and delays. Usually, going to Delhi takes extensive time, including entire days of flying, depending where you’re departing from. This is why we recommend you to be pendent of dates/times.

19:00: We meet up at the hotel lobby to have our welcome dinner

21:00: First night in Delhi

Day 2: March 16th

Early in the morning we go to the airport to have our flight to Varanasi; one of the most spiritual and religious cities in India. Once we get there, we will have a city walk to get familiar with the place. We’ll stop at the Ghats (sacred steps) to photograph the Babas (religious men who paint their faces and don’t cut off their hair as a symbol of spiritualness). In this magical place, Hindu people celebrate death at the edge of the Ganges river. We will have the chance of photographing different spiritual ceremonies, like the Aarti ceremony, at night, from a spectacular boat floating in the river.

Day 3: March 17th

We wake up early in the morning to take a boat ride through the Ganges river and watch the impressive sunrise hitting the old city. During this ride we will have many chances to photograph locals having their daily bath at the sacred river. We will also have an incredible view of the city and the fascinating old architecture.

Once we finish our boat ride, we will take a walk through the city, visiting many of the ghats, getting a new perspective of the daily life of the city. After that, we will go back to the hotel, where we will have our delicious vegetarian breakfast –As Varanasi is a sacred city, they only sell vegetarian food- and we will have some hours of rest to continue our itinerary.

We’ll have a walk through the colorful and narrow streets of Varanasi; impressive scenarios wait for us to be photographed. In India, everything occurs in the streets and we will be there with our cameras, ready to get the best images.

At sunset, we will have a photoshoot with an incredible non-model (surprise!) at the Ganges river, to capture the best photographs of blue and golden hour. At night, we will enjoy the Aarti ceremony from the ground, and we will capture many close pictures from there.

Day 4: March 18th

We wake up early in the morning to have a boat ride through the Ganges river, capturing new angles of sunrise and saying goodbye to Varanasi. Later, we go to the airport where we will have our flight back to Agra.

Once we get in Agra, we’ll check-in in the hotel and have lunch. We’re going to walk around the yard of the Taj Mahal, and then we’ll face another side of the tomb to take a boat ride in the river, to get beautiful pictures of sunset.

We will go back to the hotel and have rest. But before that, we will have a splendid dinner at an incredible restaurant that will make you breathless (and hungerless!)

Day 5: March 19th

Before sunrise we will be facing the Taj Mahal entrance to capture photographs inside of it. A unique opportunity to snap the classical Taj Mahal picture that has made us fell in love with India. After getting our ‘touristic’ picture, we will go seeking for new angles and compositions from other perspectives inside of the building.

Once we finish our tour inside the Taj Mahal, we will departure towards Vrindavan. A small city where we’ll have the fortune to photograph the Holi Festival; the most colorful festival in the world, that celebrates the end of India’s winter and the beginning of the spring.

As soon as we get into Vrindavan, we’ll check-in in our hotel and from there, we will walk through the streets of the town, where we can enjoy the Holi celebrations (In India, even weeks before the real beginning of the Holi, you can see many people celebrating with the color powder) until we get to this unique temple that open its doors to all whom wish to celebrate this wonderful festivity. We’ll have a privileged view of the event, having more chances to capture the colorful scenes of the opening ceremony. From here, the chances to create impressive pictures are endless.

Finishing our day, we’ll go back to have an exquisite vegetarian dinner –Vrindavan only sells veg-food- and we will have time to download pictures, have a rest and get prepared for the following days.

Day 6: March 20th

Holi has officially begun. The happiest and most colorful festival of all India. If India is already a highlighted country because of its color range in the architecture, streets and people dresses, now figure it out during Holi!

Breakfast will be ready early in the morning and we will head towards the temple where Holi is celebrated, before they open the doors. There will be hundreds of people waiting to get into the temple, where they’ll throw the color powder and enjoy the festivity. Once the first part of ceremony is over, we’ll go back to have lunch and a short rest.

After our rest, we’ll face Mathura, a small town where we will watch a colorful parade, where photography opportunities will be unique: Action shots, color, dancing, music, portraits and floats with different decorations will make this event a unique place for photographers.

Once the parade is over, we’ll go back to Vrindavan where we’ll have our dinner and rest.

Day 7: March 21st

Although Holi is officially over, we keep doing our best to get the best images. That’s why we’ll leave early in the morning, around 30KM, to another town where we’ll have the most spectacular expression of Holi. We’ll get inside this beautiful old temple where women rip off men’s clothes while they throw buckets full of water to the girls. During the ceremony, we will see many people throwing flower petals, color powder mixed with water, and many local people participating in the event. There’s no doubt that this is our biggest chance to get the purest magic of this festival.

As soon as our adventure is finished, we’ll have a long road trip to one of the most beautiful cities in all India: Jodhpur, the blue city. We will arrive at night, will do check-in in hotel and have rest for our next day.

Day 8: March 22nd

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we’ll visit the Jodhpur fort with the morning light and have a photowalk through the city, capturing the daily life scenes that offers this wonderful place. In Rajasthan, locations and people are great subjects to take beautiful pictures of.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we will have a photoshoot at the blue city with some Rabari –nomad men who wear colorful turbans, white dresses and big moustaches- that are progressively disappearing because of India’s globalization. During this photoshoot we will have incredible scenarios to create stunning portraits of this men that will unfortunately disappear along the years.

(The last time I went to India, looking for the Rabari, a local man told me: “Now, we are modern people, we don’t like to wear those things that old people used to like before” meaning that the Rabari will forever disappear).

Day 9: March 23rd

We’ll wake up early in the morning to walk towards the local market where we’ll have stunning scenes of local vendors that are setting up their street shops, which will be dramatically painted by the morning light. Once we finish, we’ll go back to our hotel to have breakfast.

We’ll rest few hours and then we will have our first image review. In a comfortable classroom we’ll watch our photographs and criticize our work, so you’ll have feedback about your images and how to improve your composition, light and narrative during the rest of the trip.

Before sunset, we will have our second photoshoot with a Rabari man inside this 400 years old-spectacular-blue-house and from there, we will wait to capture sunset from the balcony where you can see Jodhpur fort.

Day 10: March 24th

We will have our breakfast in Jodhpur with an incredible view of the fort, to say goodbye to this wonderful city and head towards the Thar desert, near to the Pakistan frontier, where we’ll have an amazing photo adventure dreamed by any traveler.

When we get into the That desert, we’ll take a camel ride through a beautiful desert full of yellow sand-dunes, where we will be waiting for sunset to shoot three Rabari men (color turbans) with their camels at the dunes. This photoshoot will be exclusive for our group.

At night, we’ll share a delicious local dinner inside the local village, where we’ll have a dance show that we can photograph, we’ll drink a beer and… we will go to sleep at the desert!

Yes, we will sleep at the desert. A 5 billion stars’ hotel will be waiting for us. We’ll have our bed at the sand-dunes, to photograph the night and enjoy the delightful view of the universe, crowded with starts, constellations, and of course, the milky way.

P.S: There is no risk to sleep at the desert. We will have a comfortable and pleasant experience there.

Anyway, if by any reason you don’t want to sleep at the desert, we can arrange for you a small room at the village. However, you have to tell us before the trip begins, because we will have to negotiate it with the locals. Although… Did you come aaaaaall the way to the desert to sleep inside a room and not to enjoy the starts covering you at night?

If you still decide to do it, you can enjoy the stars for a while and sleep in the small room that locals and us will arrange for you.

Day 11: March 25th

You will open your eyes early in the morning because a Rabari man riding his camel will wake you up to take some beautiful pictures of him at sunrise. An incredible dreamed scenario that you will enjoy with your camera.

Then, we will head back to the village in our 4×4 Jeep, to take breakfast and drive to Jaisalmer city.

Once we get in Jaisalmer, we’ll do check-in in our hotel and walk in the city fort: A precious place to take pictures of daily life. This is one of the few forts that allow people to live inside. So… just think about the pictures you can get there!

During the afternoon, we’ll head another desert to meet this wonderful ballerina who will leave you breathless. She’s a transgender ballerina who became an idol for many people. In a country like India, to decide to become a girl and have professional succeed is a whole feat. This beautiful girl will allow us to go inside her dressing room to document her transformation before the show. She’ll allow us to photograph her fire choreography before the local visitors –from India and Paskistan- arrive. After the shooting, we will enjoy the dinner and the incredible show.

Day 12: March 26th

At sunrise, we will have a photoshoot with our ballerina at this incredible location that for sure you will love (psst: British architecture with a wonderful lake) while she dances and plays fire for our group.

Once we finish our photoshoot, we’ll have a photo walk in the city, discovering and capturing the daily life with the soft morning light.

After lunch, we will head back to New Delhi, where our adventure will keep going.

Day 13: March 27th

When we get in Delhi, we will have a photoshoot at sunrise in one of the most impressive rivers of the city. We will have many migratory birds that come just at this time of the year, creating magical scenes that will be photographed by our lenses while we sail inside a boat in the river.

We go back to the hotel to have breakfast and start visiting some of the local temples in Delhi: impressive by architecture, colors and daily life activities.

After walking a while, we will go back to the hotel to have lunch and rest. We will take a rickshaw –the best way to discover Delhi- to have a city tour, where we can capture different events of this city.

In the afternoon, we will walk through the local market to have the best sunset light creating incredible scenes in front of our lenses. After that, we will go back for dinner and rest.

Day 14: March 28th

Before sunrise we will head to the old Delhi train station, where we will have the chance to photograph surprising scenes that will take place at the biggest train station of India. The best spontaneous scenes with the best morning light.

From there, we will go to the local market to photograph daily life events. After, we will visit another precious temple that you will love and will keep you shooting all the time.

In the afternoon, we will have a photo walk to capture more of daily life scenes and we’ll go back to our favorite temple, to wait for sunset and say goodbye to Delhi.

At night, we will have our delicious farewell dinner, where we’ll share and laugh about our experiences during the trip. India is such a special place that always leaves a real mark in visitor’s hearts, it doesn’t matter if they are photographers or not. That’s how we will conclude our India workshop 2019.

Day 15: March 29th

  1. Check-out from Delhi and flight back home
  2. Check-out from Delhi and flight to Nepal

Day 15: March 29th: Nepal extension (only FOUR seats available)

After finishing our India workshop, we’ll go to Nepal, where we’ll meet an exquisite culture and an amazing landscape.

A two hours’ flight from New Delhi will take us to Kathmandu, where a car will pick us up, we will go to check-in at the hotel and have a city walk in downtown. While walking around the city we can see many street artists, locals and Buddhist monks enjoying the ambience of this wonderful city.

We will go back to the hotel to have rest and enjoy a delicious lunch.

From our hotel, we’ll go to the monkey temple: a place where the Nepalese life occurs; accompanied by the monkeys, scenes where human life and nature meet will take place.

Day 16: March 30th

Early in the morning, we’ll have the most exciting adventure of our lives: Five photographers will take a private helicopter towards the Himalaya mountain range where we will find the famous Mount Everest (8.848 meters). We will take pictures of the Everest with the most beautiful sunrise light, from the nearest distance a helicopter can fly from the highest mountain of the world. There is no doubt that this is a real gift to any photography enthusiast and I must say: An experience that will make you full of emotions, even some tears, to be contemplating the beauty and majesty of this wonder.

We will land at the base camp (5,380 meters), and we will stay around four hours taking pictures of the climbers, sherpas, the camp and the Everest itself. From there, we will departure in our helicopter towards the highest hotel on earth, where we’ll have our breakfast before heading back to Kathmandu.

Right after our biggest adventure, that will be unforgettable, we will have some rest in our hotel. If some of the group feel like having a city walk, we can go walking around some interesting places to shoot.

Once we finish resting, we will go to a Hindu temple where we’ll see a mixture of Nepalese and Indian culture, with burning bodies, Nepalese architecture and Hindu Babas to photograph.

Day 17: March 31st

In the morning, we will go to Pokhara. Six hours driving ahead will wait for us, but we will stop during the road to photograph one of the most beautiful rice terraces where we’ll see local people working. A great chance to have a wonderful view of the terraces and shoot portraits of locals.

Once we get into Pokhara, we’ll do check-in in our beautiful hotel, and we will take a walk around the lake, where we’ll capture the sunset.

Day 18: April 1st

Early in the morning, we will hike up a big mountain where we’ll have a wonderful sunrise view. To do this, we will start even before the blue hour, to make sure that all the group can hike up slowly, with enough time to get the best spot to take pictures.

Once we get back into the hotel, we’ll have a delicious breakfast and some rest.

In the morning, our experience continues at the Buddhist monastery, where we’ll have access to the monks that will allow us to photograph their daily activities. In this monastery, there is a school that will give us many chances to create documentary photographs with red-dressed monks.

We will do our check-in in this spectacular hotel that has a wonderful view of the mountains and go to a Japanese monastery where we can take many portraits, documentary and landscape photography.

For sunset, we will visit a new location.

Day 19: April 2nd

Early in the morning, we will go to take sunrise pictures from a new location. From there, we will go back to the hotel to do check-out and head back to Kathmandu.

We will do check-in in our hotel in Kathmandu, and have a city walk around the beautiful streets of the city. At night, we will have our farewell dinner to say goodbye to our group.

Day 20: April 3rd

We will go back to Kathmandu’s airport, where we will take our flight back home.

End of the expedition.

FAQ

When does the India and Nepal 2019 workshop take place?

Our workshop in India will take place from March 15th 2019 to March 29th 2019.

*We will have a 6 days’ extension in Nepal, for those adventurers who want to join us to explore the Mt. Everest and the Himalaya mountain range, as well as visit Buddhist monasteries in two cities of this Asian country. This extension will take place from March 29th 2019 to April 3rd 2019.

Esteban, why during this time? Couldn’t be another time of the year?

Although we would like to do it during vacations time, thinking on those who study and work, we have our goal clear: Visiting India during the Holi Festival, which has a set up date because it is a local festivity and take place in March. Additionally, April is the best time to visit Everest, because the weather is really nice and allows all the climbers to have the best chances to go all the way to the top of the mountain.

Do I need VISA to enter India and Nepal?

Yes, you do. You will need VISA to get into both countries. Indian Visa is around $70USD approximately and the Nepalese VISA is around $25USD.

To obtain the Indian visa you will need to start the process in advance (a month is suggested) through the official Indian government website. We will help you out with all this process if you request it.

To obtain the Nepalese visa, you will start the process on arrival into the international airport. This is a piece of cake.  All you have to do is take your passport with you, at least 6 months valid is requested and three white sheets. Payment can be done with U.S dollars, euros, or Nepal rupee. Credit cards are also accepted (although I suggest you to bring cash with you).

No. The airplane tickets to/from Delhi and Kathmandu must be purchased by you. We can gladly help you to get the best discounts, so please do not hesitate to ask us for that.

Do I need to be athletic to assist this experience?

India: You don’t have to worry about your physical condition. We will do photo walks, but we will take many hours taking pictures in the same place and waiting for the best light. We will always be thinking about the comfort of the group, so we will frequently stop and wait for the others. Also, we will always look for the best way to move from one place to the other, to make the greatest experience for everybody, no matter any age or physical condition.

Nepal: This country is really famous for its mountains. In order to get the best photographs, we need to hike up big mountains. But don’t worry, we won’t be doing all the way to the top of the Everest, or something like that; we will do two hours hike maximum, at our own pace, considering enough time so we all can go up with the best motivation to take pictures. This hikes can be done by anyone who usually walks during daily life, and can be also done by someone who really want to get the best pictures!

In the specific case of our Everest experience, we will take you to one of the hardest places to get, with the facility that you will not have to climb up at all. All you have to take with you is your camera and then, enjoy the beautiful landscape from the helicopter’s view. Couldn’t be easier.

What language will be spoken during the expedition?

All our tour will be guided in English and Spanish. No worries, amigo!

When will you have another photo expedition to India and Nepal?

These photo expeditions are unique. We might come back to India and Nepal in 2050, but so far, we don’t have any other planned than the 2019 experience.

I have another question, who I ask to?

Please feel free to contact Esteban any time you need. He will call you back with all the detailed information you need to solve all your questions. You can send him an email: contact@estebantoro.com or get in contact by phone: +57 304 3754231
